The Worst Gaming Disasters of 2013

By Jesse Taylor

2013 was an amazing year for video games. Outstanding video games such as BioShock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider (to name a few examples) were released to critical and commercial success. Like every year of video games however, there are successes and disasters. Looking back on 2013, there certainly were quite a few gaming disasters. Here’s a few that stood out:

Top 10 Underrated Games of 2013

Tearaway_Hero

By Gabe Carey

It shouldn’t be news to any of our readers that 2013 was undoubtedly a strong year for gaming. From Grand Theft Auto V’s record sales numbers to the release of two new consoles, this year was undeniably one of the most influential years for the medium. Unfortunately, along with that influence comes the overshadowing of great games that were just too buried in all the hype to be noticed. In this list, I will acknowledge the games that were either ignored by the media or in sales numbers, or perhaps just didn’t get the critical reception they deserved.

Microsoft Trademarks “Throne Together” for Some Reason

By Nathaniel Liles

In what is widely believed to be a move toward developing a new IP, Microsoft has laid down a copyright on the name “Throne Together”. Yes, ladies and gentleman, one of those new Xbox One IP’s that everyone’s been promising is a silly pun, and while deep down I’m hoping that this is some cartoony, action-adventure Game of Thrones spin-off in the style of “Herc’s Adventures”…

League of Legends, Dota 2, Club Penguin Hacked by “DERP”

By Gabe Carey

According to their own Twitter page, a hacker group that refers to themselves as DERP took down various online gaming servers earlier today. Beginning with League of Legends, DERP extended their rampage of meaningless hacking to Dota 2, EA.com, Battle.net and even Club Penguin. Their initial reasoning behind the distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) is unknown, although they later confirmed to popular Twitch streamer, PhantomL0rd that they did it “for the Lulz”, a cringe-worthy response on the hackers’ part if I might add.

You may recall a news article I wrote just last week in which I bragged about the immense library of quality games offered by the PlayStation Plus service offered by Sony. Meanwhile, I slandered Microsofts Games With Gold for offering only older titles each month such as Halo 3 and the original Gears of War. Well, welcome to the future, boys and girls, because next month Microsoft is bringing out the big guns as 2012’s Sleeping Dogs and 2010’s Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be available for free to Xbox Live Gold members in the month of January for Xbox 360 owners.

By Austin Briddell

The wait for Battlefield 4 by EA for the PS4 was a long and arduous one, especially for a gamer who logged a ridiculous amount of time into it’s predecessor, Battlefield 3. With the game in my hands and a little over a month to play it, I’ll let you know if it’s all I ever hoped for, or if it has turned into a beautiful disaster.

Hands-on with Aeterno Blade for 3DS

By Nathaniel Liles

I got a 3DS XL for Christmas, and after dealing with the eshop outage patiently and calmly, I taped all my furniture back together, patched up the hole in my wall, returned that car I stole, and decided to see what I could download for free. I was a fairly happy camper when I discovered that there are a mess of playable demos for games there, and while most of these demos are for games that’ve already been released, one of them looked very promising, and since it was for an upcoming title, I decided to give it a playthrough and tell you guys what I think.  It was a japanese-looking 2.5D Metroidvania title, and you guys know how much of a sucker I am for some good 2.5D. That game was Aeterno Blade, and long story short… I hope you like fighting the same boss over and over. Long story long, however…

Sony Dropping Online Support for Several PS3 Games in 2014

We knew it was coming, but it still hurts…

Sony has announced that in the first half of 2014, select first-party PS3 games will no longer support their included online infrastructures. An article on the official PlayStation website details an official list of upcoming online shutdowns as well as a list of previously decommissioned online titles. Notably, Gran Turismo 5Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3 will lose their online components on May 20th, 2014. While Gran Turismo series has received a sequel since the release of Gran Turismo 5 that will still continue to support online functionality, anyone who wants to play a Resistance game online will have to stick with the catastrophic PlayStation Vita release, Resistance: Burning Skies, assuming its support isn’t withdrawn as well.

Following yesterday’s dilemma of the Pokemon Bank being removed from the Japanese eShop and having its expected release date changed in its other desired territories, it should come as no surprise that Pokemon Bank has officially been delayed for North America and European territories. Pokemon Bank is a cloud storage client for the Nintendo 3DS that allows for up to 3,000 Pokemon to be contained at once, supporting Pokemon games Black and White, Black 2 and White 2, and Pokemon X and Y.

Written by Bram Berg and Morgan Hench

That’s right folks, Zelda will be a playable character in the new Smash Bros game for the Wii U and 3DS.  Coming out in 2014 we all want to play it, and it’s looking better with every announcement. But for now, here are some images of the returning character. Also, be sure to check out Nathaniel’s round up of what we know about the new Super Smash Bros so far or Morgan’s top 7 characters that deserve to be in the new Super Smash Bros, but probably won’t make the cut.

In the midst disastrous holiday meltdown for Nintendo Network that’s arguably more detrimental than the death of Santa Claus himself, Pokemon Bank has been removed from the Japanese eShop to relieve some of the stress the online infrastructure has been encountering.

It seems that Microsoft has some catching up to do with their Games with Gold effort because the month of January will see BioShock Infinite, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons becoming available for free to PlayStation Plus users as part of its Instant Game Collection initiative. Additionally, Don’t Starve will be added to PS4’s freebie lineup with Smart As… and Worms: Battle Islands for PS Vita.
